The Labour Court found the Irish Postmasters Union’s former general secretary was unfairly dismissed and recommended €30,000 compensation on his appeal. The decision was signed on 27 January 2011. He said he was denied a chance to respond, representation and an appeal after his probation was extended. The employer said the contract allowed termination during probation and that it had concerns about his suitability. The Court found it was misconceived to treat probation as removing the need to follow fair procedures. The recommendation is in addition to three months’ pay in lieu of notice already paid.
