The Labour Court dismissed HSE Dublin North East’s appeal and upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation on travel compensation for nursing staff moved to community-based care. The decision was signed on 27 June 2008. The dispute concerned the Castlerea Formula and Woodvale Hostel, which opened on the grounds of St Davnet’s Hospital after two long-stay wards closed. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued compensation should be based on the distance from nurses’ homes to the new work location. Management said the hostel was on the old hospital site, so the move involved no additional travel or expense. The Court upheld the recommendation on the basis of the agreement as written.
