The Labour Court increased a Rights Commissioner’s recommended payment from €1,000 to €1,500 in a dispute involving Limerick City Council, in a decision dated 31 May 2007. The dispute concerned a Grade 5 Machinery Superintendent’s €30 weekly allowance and a claim for regrading. The Court said the allowance should continue notionally for pension purposes only, citing the worker’s proximity to retirement and the allowance’s pensionable nature. It also found an independent assessment of the worker’s job against comparators reasonable, with the parties to agree the assessor and terms of reference. The worker was represented by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union.
