Labour Court disallows five medical scientists’ appeal over manager promotion

The Labour Court disallowed an appeal by five Chief Medical Scientists at University College Hospital Galway seeking promotion to Laboratory Manager. It affirmed the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that the post be advertised and the workers invited to participate. The decision was dated 19 September 2005. The workers sought parity with colleagues at Cork University Hospital who had been upgraded. The hospital said the post should be filled by confined competition under its agreement with the union. The Court found the agreement clear and the hospital’s position consistent with it.
