Labour Court upholds recommendation to reinstate retained firefighter if local work and vacancy arise

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court rejected a retained firefighter’s appeal and upheld a recommendation that Leitrim County Council reinstate him if he found suitable work in the Drumshambo area and a vacancy arose. The decision was signed on 12 December 2002. The council ended his employment after he took a job about 12 miles from the fire station, outside the required response area. The union argued he had not been given recruits’ training and could have attended 80% of call-outs if trained. The council said its five-minute turnout requirement was essential and that it was prepared to re-employ him if he found local work and a vacancy arose.
