Labour Court rejects union appeal over staff nurse’s job-sharing allowances

The Labour Court disallowed the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s appeal over a staff nurse’s job-sharing allowances from the Southern Health Board. It dated its decision 8 October 2001. The dispute concerned the Castlerea Formula after the nurse transferred from a psychiatric unit in Tralee to a community day centre. The union argued she should receive the full lump sum and travel allowance; the Board said compensation was pro rata and travel allowance applied only to days worked. The Court found that management had applied the formula correctly. The decision identifies the worker only as a staff nurse.
