Labour Court narrows assessment in Central Fisheries Board grading appeal

The Labour Court modified a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation in the Central Fisheries Board’s appeal over two workers’ grading. The decision, dated 1 June 2001, limited an independent assessment to the claimants’ posts and said the recommended lump sum should be paid without prejudice to its outcome.

The dispute concerned a claim to upgrade the workers from Assistant Principal Officer (finance) to Principal Officer (standard), effective from 1 July 1998. The Board said a wider review of Fisheries Boards could affect the posts. Impact cited increased responsibilities and an assessor’s recommendation to upgrade regional chief officers. The Court allowed the appeal to the extent that it confined the assessment and clarified when the lump sum should be paid.
