Works on two new fire stations in Baltinglass and Dunlavin are due to go out to tender by the end of the year.

The two new stations, first announced as part of a €61 million Fire Service Capital Programme (2021-2025), have now passed through the detailed design stage.

In Baltinglass, the development includes the construction of a new two-storey fire station building at a site in the townland of Lathaleere, where on-site parking for 16 vehicles will also be provided.

The plans also feature a hard landscaped training yard to the rear of the new building, a new four-storey training tower at the northeast corner of the site to the rear of the main building, alongside hard and soft landscaping, drainage and site development works.

The plans for Dunlavin’s new fire station, located in Dunlavin Lower, mirror the plans for Baltinglass, include a new two-storey fire station building, training yard, and training tower.

Speaking at the September meeting of Wicklow County Council, chief fire officer Aidan Dempsey outlined the estimated cost is €3 million per fire station.

Following a question from Cllr Avril Cronin on the status of the project, Mr Demsey said efforts are being made to make sure these stations don’t face any further delays.

“The hope is that it would be this year that we would get permission to go to tender. I am just waiting for permission from the national directorate.”

Cllr Patsy Glennon welcomed the news that works on the station in Baltinglass will get underway soon.

“I brought it to the council two months ago where there were concerns about the delay and I am looking forward to it being built, along with the one in Dunlavin.”
