Wicklow town has been selected as one of eight towns across Ireland to receive funding under the Heritage Council’s Historic Towns Initiative (HTI), paving the way for the development of a comprehensive heritage led regeneration plan aimed at strengthening the town’s vibrancy, sustainability, and long term resilience.

The announcement of a €50,000 allocation was made this week by Heritage Minister James Browne.

The HTI, now a well established national programme, supports towns that seek to place their built and natural heritage at the centre of future development.

The successful application was submitted by Wicklow County Council in partnership with the Wicklow Town Team, a community driven group representing local businesses, residents, and voluntary organisations.

The funding will enable the creation of a heritage led regeneration plan, a strategic document that will guide future improvements to the town’s streetscape, public realm, and historic assets.

The plan is expected to examine the town’s architectural heritage, natural landscape, cultural identity, and economic potential.

It will also identify opportunities for conservation, restoration, and sensitive development, ensuring that Wicklow’s unique character is preserved while supporting modern needs.

Announcing the funding, Minister Browne highlighted the importance of heritage focused planning in strengthening communities.

He noted that towns with strong identities and well preserved historic cores tend to attract more visitors, support thriving local economies, and foster a deeper sense of place among residents.

Cllr Graham Richmond, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow Municipal District, described the funding as a major boost for the town’s future.

“The Historic Towns Initiative aims to promote vibrant, viable, and attractive town centres that serve as hubs for living, working, and visiting, while also functioning as social, cultural, and recreational centres for the community,” he said.

“The development of a heritage led regeneration plan is a wonderful opportunity for Wicklow town.”

Cllr Richmond emphasised that the plan will not only focus on physical improvements but also support the town’s social and cultural life, helping to create a more welcoming and engaging environment for residents and visitors alike.

The Wicklow Town Team, which has played a central role in shaping the town’s community driven initiatives in recent years, will be a key partner in the development of the regeneration plan.

The group has long advocated for improvements to the town centre, enhanced public spaces, and greater recognition of Wicklow’s heritage as a driver of economic and social vitality.

Myra Porter, chair of the town team, described the project as an exciting step forward.

“The development of this plan is an exciting opportunity for Wicklow,” she said.

“The Town Team looks forward to working collaboratively with the Council, local businesses, and residents in the coming months on a shared vision for improving the town as a place to live, work, shop, play, and visit.”

Ms Porter noted that community engagement will be a central component of the process, with residents encouraged to contribute ideas, identify priorities, and help shape the long term vision for the town.

The heritage led regeneration plan is expected to be developed over the coming months, with consultation, research, and analysis forming the foundation of the final document. Once completed, the plan will serve as a roadmap for future projects, funding applications, and policy decisions.
