A new executive committee of the Wicklow Older People’s Council has been elected, ahead of a busy autumn that is set to include a new age friendly expo.

The reformulated Executive Committee is made up of 15 members, comprising Gertrude Salley, Tom Cavanagh, Derek Connolly, Christina Moorhouse, (Mary) Ann Lyons, Betty (Elizabeth) Kelly, Hilary Taylor, Kathleen Kelleher, Ann Halpin, Mai Quaid, Ann Horan, Marie McCourt, Cora Pocock, Jacinta Hastings and Olwen Dixon.

The outgoing chair of the council, Carina Holmes welcomed the Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Cllr Melanie Corrigan, Age Friendly ambassador for County Wicklow, Senator Pat Casey, and director of services and chair of the Wicklow Age Friendly Alliance Michael Nicholson to the meeting.

Ms Holmes also welcomed the attendance of older individuals, community groups and networks from across the county.

During the meeting Ms Holmes provided an update on the range of activities the committee has been involved with over the past two years.

- A partnership with the PPN and Wicklow Volunteer Centre to host roadshows across all five Municipal Districts.

- A series of ‘Meet the Candidates’ events during the General Election 2024 campaign trail— to highlight informed voting is also age-friendly.

- “Ear to the Ground” meetings across Bray, Carnew, Aughrim, Avondale, Arklow, Wicklow, Hollywood and Greystones with engagement from Active Retirement groups, Women’s Sheds, Men’s Sheds, and the University of the Third Age.

- Representing Wicklow nationally—from OPC chair meetings to the Care Reform Commission—and locally, pushing at Age Friendly Alliance meetings for updates on the 2023–2027 strategy.

- An age friendly event in Arklow with more than 200 participants and contributions from Central Bank speakers.

- Tackling walkability audits, pushing for loop buses, and advocating for ‘One Stop Shops’ in primary care centres—where you can get support and advice.

- Advocating for better medical centre staffing, community care hubs, respite for carers and digital training—so that no one has to ask for help to purchase a bus ticket online.

Ms Holmes also informed the meeting that plans for future activities are moving forward with a climate course being developed for over 55’s, in conjunction with the community climate action officer in Wicklow County Council. This is due to take place in Bray in early 2026, facilitated by Jacinta Barrins.

An age friendly expo is also scheduled for October 30 at the Arklow Bay Hotel, where a series of workshops, demonstrations and presentations will take place. Full details for the event are currently being developed and will be publicised closer to the date.

In her last remarks as chair of the council, Ms Holmes stressed the importance of making sure older people feel a part of their community.

“With over 27pc of Wicklow’s population now aged 55 and above, the need for seamless, collaborative service delivery across all the Age Friendly Alliance members has never been more critical.”

“The County Wicklow OPC Executive stands firmly committed to advancing the five-year Age Friendly Strategy—an ambitious and transformative roadmap that will, when fully implemented, enhance the quality of life for older people.”

“By championing this strategy, we are not only responding to demographic realities but seeking to actively shape Wicklow into a vibrant, inclusive county where growing older is celebrated and supported at every stage.”

Senator Pat Casey, who is the age friendly ambassador for County Wicklow, reaffirmed his commitment to support the work of the executive.

“I’m proud to stand with the Older People’s Council of County Wicklow at this year’s AGM. Our older population is a source of strength and inspiration, and their lived experiences enrich our county in countless ways.”

“The council remains a steadfast advocate, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are addressed.” he added.

The election for the chair and vice chair of the Executive Committee of Wicklow’s Older People’s Council will take place during the committee’s first meeting, which is expected to take place shortly.
