Wicklow IPAS centre that sparked violent protests may never reopen
The Wicklow PeopleThe Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth has confirmed that there are no current plans to reopen the River Lodge site in Trudder, Newtownmountkennedy as an IPAS accommodation centre.
In April last year violent scenes broke out in the area after workers contracted to carry out construction work on the former HSE facility attempted to enter the site.
Several people were arrested during clashes with public order gardai while three garda patrol cars were damaged, and fires were set.
Tented accommodation at River Lodge had been established under emergency circumstances, and temporary provisions were made to accommodate incoming residents.
The international protection applicants who were staying at the site have since been relocated to other locations and the building has been lying vacant since last October.
During the June meeting of Wicklow Municipal District, Independent Cllr John Snell enquired about what measures are being taken to restore the area.
“Locals in the town are still reeling from the violence that occurred last year. Footpaths and public lighting in the area need to be upgraded.”
Cllr Louise Fenelon Gaskin and Cllr Shane Langrell were informed of the update and said in a joint statement they are now looking to find out how the facility will be used.
“We have been actively engaging with the Department and with Minister Colm Brophy to raise concerns about the infrastructure and overall suitability of the location.”
“We understand there has been concern and speculation about what might happen next. We are now working with the Department to confirm what the future use of the site will be, and we will continue to ensure the community is kept informed.”
The move comes after a site in Arklow that was under consideration was also ruled out last year.
The old Eir depot on Emoclew Road was deemed in need of too much work to be made suitable for habitation.
Locals had protested against the property being an IPAS centre for several days outside the site.
