Wicklow greenway project gains momentum after years of delay
The Wicklow PeopleA delegation from a new committee advocating for progress on the Arklow to Shillelagh Greenway have met with the county council’s project team.
During a recent public meeting in Tinahely, local representatives discussed the greenway’s potential for tourism and safe connections for walkers and cyclists.
Concerns were raised about the proposed route impacting Aughrim village, with residents worried about planning considerations for infrastructure and traffic management.
TDs Brian Brennan, Malcolm Byrne, and Fionntán O’Súilleabháin were among those who expressed their support for the project and pointed out the €500,000 funding had been allocated this year, but the project was has been bound by bureaucratic challenges for over 14 years.
Following a separate meeting at County Buildings, delegates were informed about the council’s dedicated greenway team. Previously it was managed by their general projects team.
Slight amendments have been made to the emerging preferred route due to environmental considerations. The route itself is currently being finalised and will be brought forward to design stage and planning at a later date.
Future changes are only expected if required by survey results or other planning considerations.
It will then be sent to Transport Infrastructure Ireland for approval with an expectation that will be approved by the end of the year.
Cllr Peter Stapleton, who attended the meeting has advised that all affected landowners will be written to in advance of the publication of the route, so they know where they stand.
The council is currently progressing with the tender process for the appointment of a consultant to lead the design of the greenway and get the project through planning. It’s expected they will be appointed by Christmas.
During the September meeting of Wicklow County Council, director of services Joe Lane outlined to Cllr Stapleton that a report on the current design stage will be submitted to Transport Infrastructure Ireland shortly for review.
Delegates from the committee are due to receive a further update from the council early in the new year.
In a statement the newly formed “Save the Arklow-Shillelagh Greenway” campaign group believes now is the time to act.
“For over 14 years, our communities have been promised the Arklow–Shillelagh Greenway. It has the power to link our towns and villages, boost local tourism, support businesses, and provide a safe, scenic route for walkers and cyclists.
“Despite funding, plans, and wide support, progress has stalled."
“The greenway is not just a line on a map. It’s a lifeline for our communities, businesses, and families. With persistence, accountability, and unity, we can make it happen”
