Search for new Wicklow Gaol operator begins as council launches tender
The Wicklow PeopleA tender process is underway to find a new operator of Wicklow Gaol.
Following the recent closure for essential structural maintenance, and the expiration of the previous operator's contract, Wicklow County Council is now actively looking for proposals from a new management partner to build on the gaol's strong foundations. The council is seeking an experienced and innovative operator who can realise the full potential of the gaol.
The new operating contract is said to offer “exceptional opportunities for the successful partner to implement a fresh vision for Wicklow Gaol, including the development of updated, immersive visitor experiences and maximising commercial potential through expanded food, beverage and other offerings”.
The new operator will work to develop a diverse range of programming, while promoting the gaol as a must-visit destination, providing a significant boost to local businesses and the broader county economy.
The new operator is also being asked to explore opportunities for greater local engagement, “including educational programs, partnerships with local history groups, and utilising the space for community-led festivals and events.”
As the contract with the current operator, Wicklow Historic Gaol CLG, under the guidance of Wicklow Enterprise Park, comes to an end, council officials have commissioned a Conservation Management Plan that will inform a schedule of improvement works at the site. Initial efforts will address leaks and essential repairs, along with some external maintenance.
Following the procurement process and improvement works, it is anticipated that Wicklow Gaol will reopen within a few months, ready for the next summer tourist season.
Cllr Melanie Corrigan, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, believes this new contract will deliver a long-term future for the amenity that respects its history while maximising its potential.
“This tender is an open invitation to experienced partners to help us create a world-class attraction that benefits our local community and county. We look forward to receiving innovative proposals.”
Meanwhile Wicklow County Council chief executive Emer O’Gorman, added in a statement that the publication of the tender marks a pivotal moment.
“The focus is now on selecting a new operator who will ensure Wicklow Gaol is fully prepared to capitalise on its various opportunities, ready to welcome visitors and serve our community for the next summer tourist season and well into the future.”
The deadline for receipt of submissions is Thursday, November 13 at 5pm.
