Residents gather ahead of meeting with Transport Minister over Herbert Road N11 junction closure
The Wicklow PeopleIt follows a presentation made to members of Bray Municipal District on Tuesday last week, where the group ‘Stop the closure of Herbert Road’ criticised the elected members about the lack of action to address the issue.
Standing by the same picnic table where she launched the campaign back in April, co-ordinator Claire Finnegan spoke passionately about the importance of getting all residents involved.
“We’ve been told that closing the Herbert Road junction to make way for a bus corridor is the way to go. However, we believe this will lead to severe congestion on major routes into the town, disrupting both personal commutes and businesses.
“Limiting access will deter visitors while damaging Bray's appeal as a tourist destination during weekends and the summer. The local consultation process has blatantly ignored the voices of local residents.” she added.
Local councillor Joe Behan and Wicklow TD John Brady were also in attendance.
Deputy Brady has been active with the campaign over recent months and said there is clear opposition to the proposals.
“The stark reality is that the traffic plans as they currently stand are not just unworkable, they are going to result in a disaster for motorists and residents who currently use the Herbert Road junction, and the Hills roundabout.” he added.
Despite pushback from the local community Wicklow County Council is pushing ahead with plans to progress the bus priority scheme.
Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien is due hold a meeting this week to discuss what the Tánaiste has branded the “stupid” plan to close the junction.
The meeting was arranged directly by the Tánaiste following a series of engagements with residents and campaigners and weekly engagements with the Transport chief.
‘Stop the closure of Herbert Road’ has already clocked up over 2,300 members online.
Co-ordinator Claire Finnegan said they are prepared to mount protests until the bitter end.
"This meeting may well be our last chance to stop this closure. We need your support. Spread the word like you’ve won the lottery.” she said to rapturous applause.
