Katie Taylor Croke Park homecoming proposal being reviewed by government
The Wicklow PeopleIt’s emerged that initial contact has been made between the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport and Katie Taylor's promoter ahead of a potential bout at Croke Park in Dublin later this year.
The information is contained in reply to a parliamentary question submitted by Wicklow TD John Brady where Sport Minister Patrick O’ Donovan confirmed a promoter has been in contact with his Department in recent weeks, regarding the possibility of the major sporting event taking place in Dublin later in 2026.
The reply noted that, while some preliminary information has been provided, the promoter has been asked to provide more detail of any specific State support being sought.
Deputy Brady has welcomed the development, but has called on Government to provide the necessary support to make Katie Taylor’s dream of defending her title at Croke Park before her retirement a reality.
“Katie Taylor is one of Ireland’s greatest ever athletes, and a huge source of inspiration for people, especially young women, in Wicklow and across the country.
“She has often said that fighting at Croke Park and ending her career in front of her home fans is one of her ultimate dreams.
“While it is welcome to hear that initial contact has been made between the Department and Katie Taylor’s promoter, Government must now deliver and provide the necessary support to make her dream of defending her title at Croke Park a reality.
“The government found €10 million for the recent NFL game at Croke Park, many millions more on the US College Football series every year since 2022, and €58 million has been spent directly on the Ryder Cup in Adare.
“They must now provide the necessary support to make this event happen and deliver an Irish sporting moment for the ages.”
Taylor is the undisputed world super lightweight champion, which brings specific governing body obligations.
The World Boxing Association has previously pressed for a mandatory defence against Miriam Gutierrez, though they often grant extensions for high profile fights.
Having completed a 3-0 sweep of her trilogy with Amanda Serrano in July 2025, that chapter is considered closed.
Chantelle Cameron's camp has expressed interest in being the final opponent for Taylor's retirement bout in 2026, though Cameron recently moved up to super-welterweight, which might complicate an undisputed title defence at 140lbs.
The stadium's schedule for late 2026 is currently largely open, following a busy summer season of Gaelic games and major concerts.
High-profile events like performances by The Weeknd (August 22-23) and Bon Jovi (August 30) are already confirmed.
The All-Ireland Senior Championship Finals typically conclude in late July or August, meaning the pitch is generally available for third-party events from September onwards.
The Aer Lingus College Football Classic weekend (late August) often involves stadium activity, but October and November remain clear of major public bookings at this stage.
While Croke Park is the top of the list, the Bray native has confirmed that if a deal isn't reached, other Dublin venues are on the table for her 2026 farewell:
The Aviva Stadium is a major outdoor alternative with slightly different logistics, while the 3Arena is a smaller, indoor venue where Taylor has fought several times.
