Lara Gillespie has expressed her pride at being a Wicklow native after the Cathaoirleach and elected members of the local authority held a civic reception in her honour this week, to celebrate her success at becoming Ireland’s first female track cycling world champion.

The reception was held in the council chamber, where both invited guests and members of Lara’s family gathered for the occasion, creating a heartfelt and celebratory atmosphere.

Speeches from those councillors present highlighted her dedication and impact and recognising Lara’s hard work, commitment and well-deserved success.

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Melanie Corrigan said Lara’s success is a remarkable triumph by one of our own.

“I’ve known Lara since she was a small child. Her gold medal victory at the 2025 UCI Track World Championships in Santiago, Chile, marks a proud moment not only for her, but for Wicklow and indeed, the entire country."

Meanwhile chief executive Emer O’Gorman said her success carries special significance.

“It showcases what can be achieved when local talent is nurtured, when clubs and volunteers give their time, and when young people are encouraged to strive. It reinforces the value of investing in sport and physical activity, ensuring that diverse opportunities are open to all, regardless of background or ability."

Speaking during the ceremony, Lara paid tribute to those who supported her career.

“I’m so grateful to have come from Wicklow, sport is what we did as kids and we were always encouraged to take part, no matter our abilities.

“I’ve had so much support from my coaches along the way. All those words of encouragement mattered so much growing up, most especially when I hit rock bottom or when considering other sports.”

“I hope I can inspire other young girls to take up sport in the future, either professionally or as a hobby. In the end we all benefit from it.”

“Thank you so much to the council for this honour, I’m so touched, and it will encourage me to keep going.” she added.

Last week Lara was present for the official sod turning to launch the construction of the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre in Dublin.

In September, Sport Ireland received final approval for €100 million in funding for what will be the National Velodrome and Badminton Centre, set for completion in early 2028. The site is adjacent to the Sport Ireland Indoor Arena at the Abbotstown campus.

It will feature a raised 250-metre indoor cycling track, with 12 badminton courts along with seating for up to 1,000 spectators.
