Historic Wicklow Courthouse’s future drifts as minister reports zero applications for community use
The Wicklow PeopleThe long-running saga of the historic Wicklow Courthouse has taken another turn after Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan outlined the government’s latest position on the future of the historic building.
His response, issued to Wicklow TD John Brady, confirms that the courthouse remains closed indefinitely, with no renovation funding allocated under the current National Development Plan, and no immediate prospect of community use.
Minister O’Callaghan stressed that the Courts Service alone manages court buildings, including decisions on maintenance, renovation, and future use. He noted that the Courts Service estate is large, geographically dispersed, and ageing, requiring a multi‑annual programme of works that must be phased according to capacity and affordability.
Within that context, Wicklow Courthouse, located in Wicklow town, has remained a difficult case. Closed since September 2010 due to health and safety concerns, the building has suffered extensive deterioration over the intervening years.
Although roof works were completed in 2025 to address dry rot that had spread into adjoining structures, the minister confirmed that the building remains unsuitable for public access.
Crucially, the minister stated that no funding for full renovation has been included in the current phase of the National Development Plan.
Only preparatory and planning work has been financed, allowing the Courts Service to develop business cases for potential future projects involving courthouse development in Wicklow.
This means that while the courthouse has not been formally abandoned, no capital works are scheduled, and any future restoration remains hypothetical.
The minister also addressed the question of community use. He said the Courts Service is “open” to making the courthouse available for community purposes but cannot do so at present because of ongoing health and safety risks.
He added that the Courts Service has not received any applications for disposal of the building for community or other uses.
However, the adjoining former library building has been made available to Wicklow County Council, offering at least some civic benefit from the wider complex.
Local representatives have repeatedly criticised the prolonged closure, pointing to years of delay, partial works, and what they describe as wasted public money.
The courthouse, a landmark building in the centre of Wicklow town, has become a symbol of stalled progress and unmet commitments. Without capital investment, the courthouse cannot be restored or repurposed.
The planning work now underway may eventually lead to a business case for redevelopment, but such projects typically require substantial funding and long lead times. For now, the courthouse remains closed and inaccessible.
