Wicklow County Council are gearing up to hear presentations from prospective candidates seeking a nomination for the upcoming presidential election.

A meeting has been set for September 16 where eight candidates are to make formal pitches to elected members of the local authority, seeking their support for a place on the ballot paper.

However, no information has been provided on who will attend the council chamber to make their presentation.

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Melanie Corrigan, confirmed to elected members present during their monthly meeting on Monday that they would listen to oral submissions from those hoping to receive the support of the local authority on that date, in their effort to find a ballot paper nomination.

“To make sure we are prepared, we will convene a special meeting on that date during which we will accommodate all submissions from interested parties before nominations for the ballot paper close,” Cllr Corrigan said.

“All interested parties need to be present in the council chamber on the day to make their presentations.” she added.

A person wishing to stand in the Presidential election must be at least 35 years of age and be nominated by four local authorities or a minimum of 20 TDs and Senators.

A date for the election which will determine the 10th President of Ireland has yet to be confirmed, Michael D Higgins will complete his second term of office on November 11. Funded by the Local Democracy Reporting Scheme
