Wicklow County Council have renewed their commitment to explore the acquisition of the former health centre in Donard, to keep the building in the community for community use.

Following a recommendation from Cllr Avril Cronin at both the September and October monthly council meeting, the council have agreed to access the future potential use of the site, located in the heart of the rural village.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Cronin informed council executives of a meeting she held with members of the community in Donard and the Glen of Imaal, who asked her to speak to the council on their behalf.

“A few community groups and organisations were represented at the meeting, and they expressed their interest in keeping the building in the community, for community use.

“We discussed several ideas for the building, how it would be a huge benefit to the community, located ideally in the middle of the rural village and how it is vitally important to keep the building for community use.”

The centre is currently up for sale, carrying an advised minimum value of €160,000. The site is located on a central c. 0.11-acre site that has space for parking of vehicles. Extending to 72.5 sqm, the building comprises an entrance porch, a storeroom, a lobby/waiting room, two offices and two toilets.

Last month, the Health Service Executive (HSE) confirmed that the centre would not reopen and was instead being disposed of.

Wicklow County Council chief executive Emer O’Gorman acknowledged the potential value of keeping the property in use for the community.

“It's right, slap bang in the middle of the village. A very important community facility. I’m certainly open to the acquisition of it. I know there's an existing group in place there. I think it would be helpful if they put their thoughts together as to what they see the use of that building be used for and we can explore it there. But I am very, very open for it.

“I know it is up for auction, but we might contact the HSE directly ourselves and see if we can do a deal outside of that.”

Cllr Cronin stressed the importance of keeping the property for public use.

“Given the huge demand for space, and the large geographical rural area of Donard and the Glen of Imaal, the acquisition of the health centre would enhance this, allow for further community activity, and become a home for groups within this small rural village, revitalising what is now a derelict building.”

Cllr Cronin continued, by expressing the disappointment felt by the community when the centre closed and the opportunity that now exists to bring new life to the building.

“The Community Enterprises CLG, have a proven track record and have revitalised the community hall into what is now the heart of the village.

“We need to keep our rural villages alive and support the community and voluntary organisations that have the passion and dedication to their community.

“I will continue to work with the local community and with Wicklow County Council on this quest.” she added.
