Wexford’s Cathal Byrne has been appointed as Seanad Government Chief Whip by Fine Gael leader Simon Harris. Senator Byrne, who is from Ballyhogue, was elected to the Seanad last year having served as a councillor in the Enniscorthy Municipal District from 2019 to 2025.

Announcing the appointment, Deputy Harris said Senator Byrne has “proven himself to be a strong and reliable public representative, doing immense work to support his own constituents of Wexford during the flooding experienced earlier this year. I have no doubt he will bring that same level of dedication to his new role.”

The Chief Whip chairs the weekly meeting of the Legislation Committee. This committee meets to discuss the progress of Bills in departments.

Senator Byrne said he was “deeply honoured” to have been appointed as chief whip and said the role would give him the “opportunity to contribute at the heart of government decision making.”

“I look forward to working constructively with senators from all parties to tackle the challenges ahead and deliver for communities across Ireland, including for my own in Wexford,” he added.
