Over five months since Storm Chandra caused havoc across Wexford the government has announced €13.9m to repair roads damaged by flooding in the county. Wexford has received the largest allocation in the country for repairs with neighbouring Wicklow (€10.7), Kilkenny (€3.4m), and Carlow (€2.8) also given funding.

Announcing the funding, Housing Minister and Enniscorthy TD, James Browne, said he “wasn’t going to accept anything less than a serious allocation so that Wexford County Council can get on with the job for people.”

Thanking his party colleagues in the council and Cathaoirleach Lisa McDonald “who did not let this matter drop in the last number of months”, Minister Browne said the funding was “critical”, “absolutely needed” and “urgent”.

“It will help restore roads that suffered significant damage many of which have become dangerous for both walkers and our motorists,” he said.

“Many of our local communities have experienced disruption as a result, and repairing this infrastructure is essential to ensuring safe and reliable access for families, businesses and emergency services.

“I know the extent of the damage caused in many parts of Wexford, and I will continue to work with Wexford County Council and the Government to ensure these repairs are completed as quickly as possible.”

Minister Browne added that continued investment in local and regional roads is vital to improving connectivity and supporting rural communities throughout Co Wexford.
