The manager of the Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) has explained why the Irish flags were removed from the Seamus Rafter Bridge after concerns were raised by members of the public. With the tricolour being adopted by some right-wing factions and local councils in Dublin and Cork removing flags from public places there were fears that a similar approach was being taken in Co Wexford.

However, at the October meeting of the EMD a full explanation was provided.

Councillor Jackser Owens, who had previously raised the issue on behalf of the local community, once more asked why the flags on the bridge had been taken down in Enniscorthy when other areas in the county, among them New Ross, still had theirs up.

"We take them down at this time of year every year,” replied district manager Claire Lawless. “The Christmas lights will be going up soon so we need to make space for them. The flags have been there since St Patrick’s Day and they’ve become tattered and torn.”
