A Wexford councillor has issued a full and frank apology to the chair of Leinster GAA after he mistakenly accused him of not responding to correspondence regarding traffic issues outside a local GAA venue. At the October meeting of the Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) Councillor John O’Rourke said he had written to the chair of Wexford GAA four years ago about parking problems outside St Patrick’s Park at Pearse Road.

While not mentioning him by name, Cllr O’Rourke said that the person he had written to was now the chair of Leinster GAA, a position Mr Derek Kent assumed in January 2023.

However, Mr Kent left his role with Wexford GAA in 2020 and was not at the helm when Cllr O’Rourke emailed the chair with his concerns.

And at the November meeting of the EMD, Cllr O’Rourke accepted he had made a mistake.

“I made a statement at our October meeting with regards to the car parking at the venue in Enniscorthy where I said the current chair of Leinster GAA was in charge of Wexford GAA at the time,” he said. “However, when I consulted my notes I realised that it was his successor I had written to.

"I wish to apologise to Mr Kent, it was a mistake on my behalf, I hope he will accept my apology and that the matter can now be rectified.”

Returning to the issue at hand, Cllr O’Rourke confirmed he had spoken to Mr Kent about the parking issues at St Patrick’s Road and that a change in scheduling had been proposed to alleviate congestion.
