Wexford County Council (WCC) is “pursuing an idea” which may resolve one of the longest-standing traffic issues in the county. For over 25 years residents at Talbot Green in Wexford town have been campaigning to have school buses removed from the area.

Currently, every morning and afternoon during term, dozens of buses collect and drop off students from three secondary schools in the direct vicinity of Talbot Green. As a result, the narrow street which is overlooked by houses on both sides, is backlogged with vehicles as students gather to wait for buses.

In addition to the traffic issues, residents have raised concerns regarding anti-social behaviour as hundreds of teenagers converge upon this small community every day.

And while public meetings have been held with politicians, and surveys have been carried out by roads engineers, a resolution has yet to be found.

However, at the September meeting of the Wexford Borough District, senior engineer Lar Lett provided councillors with a somewhat cryptic update.

“I’m pursuing an idea I have on that,” said Mr Lett. “I can’t say too much about it at the moment, but I’ll have a response within the next week.”

Providing some additional details, Councillor Tom Forde said WCC had identified some land in the area which could be used to facilitate the buses.

“WCC is trying to find out who has the ownership of it, and if it would be a possibility for us to acquire it in the future,” he said.
