Wexford council makes u-turn on proposals to change layout of roads in centre of Gorey
Wexford PeopleWexford County Council (WCC) has shelved plans to make Church Street in the centre of Gorey a left-hand turn only junction. The decision comes after chair of WCC, Councillor Joe Sullivan, conducted an unofficial survey on the flow of traffic at Church St and subsequently declared the proposed changes would “frustrate drivers no end and cause incidents of road rage in an already traffic congested town”.
In addition to Cllr Sullivan’s concerns, WCC received 13 further submissions from members of the public regarding the proposed changes and, as a result, district engineer Joanne Kehoe has opted to suspend any alterations until a broader review of the town’s roads system is carried out.
Speaking at the monthly meeting of the Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District (GKMD), Ms Kehoe said consultants would now be hired to “conduct a traffic review” in Gorey and their recommendations would then be assessed accordingly.
“The proposal now is to review traffic flow right through the centre of the town and make our alterations based on that report,” she said.
The decision was welcomed by Cllr Pip Breen who said the town needed to be redesigned in its entirety.
“We are due a full traffic review of the town anyway, it needs a complete revamp.”
