Upgrades to dangerous Wexford junction include ‘little curbs and lovely yellow and black paint’ but no changes to layout
Wexford PeopleUpgrades to one of Wexford’s most dangerous junctions have amounted to not much more than “little curbs and lovely yellow and black paint”.
At least that was the assessment of Councillor Ger Carthy who asked just who had designed the works at Starvehall Junction near Rathaspeck.
“I’d love to know what the engineering design was on that,” he said at the September meeting of the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD). “They put in little curbs and lovely yellow and black paint, but no changes to the junction or the sight lines at all.
“This is crazy stuff, ludicrous stuff. Who designed that? I don’t know how many crashes there was last year, but there’ll be as many this year.”
Cllr Lisa McDonald was similarly dismissive of the new layout at the junction.
“The people who use that junction on a regular basis were left in the dark as to what was going on,” she said. “They thought it was going to be a big job, but it turned out to be quite tame.
“Now we have a situation where a lot of land is going to be rezoned for residential use in that area and there will be even more traffic using that junction. There’s already two housing estates there, it needed more work.”
Given the location of the junction, and how it borders the RMD and the Wexford Borough, district engineer Michael Brazzill said he would liaise with his Wexford counterpart Lar Lett and return with further information.
