‘To let’ signs in Wexford town ‘dwarfing’ advertisements from local businesses

‘To let’ signs on vacant commercial premises in Wexford town are “dwarfing” those of businesses trying to advertise their wares. That’s according to Labour councillor Vicky Barron who has called upon Wexford County Council (WCC) to determine whether the signs are in breach of local planning laws.

“Is there a size limit on those ‘to let’ signs?” she asked at the monthly meeting of WCC. “Last year we opted to restrict signs on bollards and sandwich boards for businesses, but the ‘to let’ signs are massive; they’re dwarfing the business owners’ advertisements. We’re trying to promote businesses and get people into our towns but when you come into the town and the first thing you see are six giant ‘to let’ signs it’s not a good look.”

Accepting that some of the signs are “quite large" director of planning Liz Hore said that, although the signs are erected temporarily, she would look into the matter further.

Cllr Barron raised the issue again at the April meeting of the Wexford Borough District and was informed by senior planner Graeme Hunt that size regulations did exist for to let signs.

“We could talk to the auctioneers, they are the ones ultimately responsible for them,” he added.

Welcoming this response, Cllr Barron said that “anyone who want to invest in a shop unit in Wexford will already know it exists. They don’t need to be told with signs of this size.”
