The students of Scoil Mhuire, Rosslare Strand have celebrated Bike Week by cycling to school with a special garda escort. Around 120 students cycled a distance of 1.6 km from the beach car park to Scoil Mhuire with motorists kindly giving way to ensure safe travel.

The journey was made even safer by the Safe Routes to School works which were completed at Scoil Mhuire in 2024 and make it an ideal location for students to cycle to class. Those works saw new footpaths, cycle lanes, and pedestrian crossings developed outside and around the school to allow families to walk and wheel to school.

Clinton Donovan, Wexford County Council’s Active Travel Officer, praised the event and its participants.

“It was fantastic to see the children so enthusiastic about their cycle to school and hopefully it will help show them that cycling is fun and can be enjoyed by everyone,” he said.

Mr Donovan also commended the local motorists for their patience and support, noting the positive atmosphere contributed greatly to the experience for both cyclists and spectators.

Refreshments on the day were provided by the local Centra in Rosslare Strand.
