Works at one of Co Wexford’s most dangerous junctions are finally set to commence in the third quarter of this year after the local council confirmed its safety audit was now complete. With the latest in a series of accidents occurring earlier this month, Larkin’s Cross has become a blackspot for motorists exiting and entering the junction to and from Taghmon.

Among the many road traffic accidents to have happened there over the past two decades have been a number of fatalities, and, in that time, local representatives have repeatedly called for safety measures to be installed at the junction.

At the January meeting of Wexford County Council (WCC) Councillor Robbie Staples was the latest to request an update on the status of the works at Larkin’s Cross.

“Do we have any timeframe as to when the auditors are due to come back to us?” he asked. “I note there was another accident there over the weekend.”

“The first stage safety audit has been completed and we should be started construction in Q3 of this year,” confirmed director of roads Eamonn Hore.

The update follows a serious road incident at the junction on the morning of January 9, where emergency services rushed to the scene of a two-car collision. The crash bore a similar pattern to many incidents at the junction over the years, with one car emerging onto the main N25 at a junction that had been labelled a “death trap” by locals.

Wexford Fire Service were required to extricate the elderly occupants from one of the vehicles and they were tended to and rushed to the nearby Wexford General Hospital by the National Ambulance service. Their injuries were understood to be non-life-threatening.
