Safety works at notorious Wexford junction expected to be carried out in 2026
Wexford PeopleWorks to improve sightlines at one of Co Wexford’s most dangerous junctions are expected to take place in the early months of 2026. Since being elected to the council last year, Councillor Robbie Staples has been campaigning for safety works to be carried out at Ballinesker Cross near his native Curracloe and he has confirmed that the local council is now examining the notorious junction.
Particularly hazardous during the peak summer months when the county’s beaches welcome thousands of visitors, Ballinesker Cross requires “urgent safety improvements” according to Cllr Staples.
Urging Wexford County Council (WCC) and the national transport authorities to prioritise infrastructure upgrades at the junction, Cllr Staples said it is the scene of near misses on a daily basis.
“The whole purpose of this is to try and prevent a bad accident from occurring there, there’s near misses happening at that Cross all the time, even when we were getting the photos taken we saw a driver turning right to Blackwater and he almost got swept out of it,” said Cllr Staples after visiting the location with The Wexford People’s photographer.
With sightlines at the junction causing the majority of the problems, Cllr Staples confirmed an agreement had been reached with the landowners regarding the hedges and ditches obscuring drivers’ views.
“Now it’s just a matter of the council implementing low cost safety measures to ensure there’s correct visibility for road users there. I’m hoping that sometime next year we’ll be able to find the funds to get these works done.”
