We may have just endured approximately 200 days of consecutive rain, but brighter times are ahead. And when those times arrive, when the rain disappears for a couple of hours in July, there are a number of scenic locations in the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD) for lovers of nature to enjoy.

Recipients of The Green Flag Award for 2026, representiatives from the Rosslare Harbour Memorial Park and Gardens, Murrintown Community Centre, Foulksmills Park, and Our Lady’s Island, attended the monthly meeting of the RMD where they were praised for their efforts in creating and maintaining these community areas.

Managed by An Taisce, The Green Flag Award is the international benchmark for quality parks and green spaces in Ireland. These awards recognise high-standard, sustainable management across public parks, gardens, and community sites in counties across the country.

“We are very fortunate to have such proactive groups in our district, and I am proud to be able to support you in your endeavours as you provide these facilities for your communities and those visiting our villages,” said cathaoirleach of the RMD, Councillor Ger Carthy, as he offered his congratulations to the groups.

“Thank you for your contributions to our district," added Cllr Aoife Rose O’Brien, “we rely on groups like yours to bring a sense of warmth and togetherness to our communities, and i’m very proud of you all.”

Cllr Jim Codd meanwhile, took a particular interest in an event which has become one of the highlights of the year in Co Wexford.

“The Kentucky Derby has nothing on the Foulksmills Duck Race,” he said. “There is a community support in the village to match no other; and crowds throng to see the duck race, it’s such a wonderful occasion with a great sense of fun.”

As a former winner of the duck race, Cllr Frank Staples could attest to the community endeavours in Foulkmills, and he extended his support to all of this year’s recipients.

“I wish to congratulate you all on your achievements, this underlines the work you do,” he said.
