Rosslare councillors willing to take roads left untended by colleagues in Wexford town – ‘All these areas are being ignored’

Having consistently called upon their colleagues in Wexford town to tend to the roads bordering their district, Rosslare councillors are now preparing to claim those roads for themselves. The condition of areas like Sinnottstown Lane in Drinagh, the junction at Rathaspeck, and Starvehall Lane, have repeatedly come under scrutiny in the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD) monthly meetings and at the September gathering Councillor Lisa McDonald banged an all too familiar drum.

“People from our district and the New Ross district use the New Line to go into Wexford town and parts of it are not being maintained,” she said. “From the Mountain Bar into the town belongs to the Wexford Borough District and it’s not being repaired. It’s the same on the Kerlogue Road as well, at Starvehall Lane and Cross, and the junction at Rathaspeck, all these roads are being ignored by the Wexford councillors.

“Those roads are very important to the people in our district. I don’t know what we're going to do about this, because it’s falling on deaf ears. Maybe we need to have a joint meeting with the borough members and the engineers so that we can ensure the people from our district can get into Wexford town safely.”

However, that suggestion was countered with something altogether more impactful.

“Would you be amenable to a motion being forwarded to the director of roads requesting that those roads be encompassed in our area and we would receive the appropriate funding?” asked cathaoirleach of the RMD, Cllr Ger Carthy. “I don’t know if there’d be any benefit in meeting the borough.”

With financing for roads across the county historically tight, Cllr McDonald said she would propose such a motion so long as the redrawing of boundaries was done “on a pro-rata basis”.

Ever the diplomat, roads engineer Michael Brazzill said he would need to discuss the matter further with his colleagues in the Wexford Borough District.
