Community groups from across south Wexford had the opportunity to meet with likeminded organisations at a special networking event held in Our Lady’s Island Community Centre last week. Hosted by the the cathaoirleach of the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD) Councillor Ger Carthy the event was attended by more than 100 people representing over 30 groups from the area.

Speakers on the night provided information on various grant schemes that groups can avail of, including Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAG), Community Climate Action Programme, LEADER Programme and Department Grants.

Sergeant Eddie Wilde and Ned Kearney spoke to the group about community policing, the community alert scheme, and the community safety co-ordinator for the county, and Liam O’Donovan gave an overview on the Wexford Local Community Safety Partnership.

Our Lady’s Island was showcased on the night with Cllr Carthy providing an overview of the projects that have been completed and are in progress for the area and identified the different funding streams that were utilised for each.

Nóirín Cummins, district manager of the RMD, highlighted some of the successful projects that have been delivered over recent years including the €1.2m investment in the Bank Community Enterprise Hub in Rosslare Harbour, the €1m announcement for the Rural Regeneration Project in Rosslare Strand and Rosslare Harbour, the €1.5m approval for Ballymitty Community Centre, and, more recently, the approved Outdoor Recreation Investment Scheme (ORIS) funding for footpaths from Our Lady’s Island to Carne and Wellingtonbridge to Little Sea.

“These networking events give community groups an opportunity to meet with likeminded groups and share their experiences of the work that is happening in their area, they can learn from each other’s successes and setbacks, and gain inspiration to enhance their own projects,” said Ms Cummins.
