Proposal to make busy Gorey junction left-hand turn only met with overwhelmingly negative response

A proposal to create a left-hand only turn at a busy Gorey road has been met with an overwhelmingly negative public response according to local councillors. Earlier this year, Wexford County Council (WCC) revealed plans to make Church Street in the middle of the town a left-hand only turn but, at the monthly meeting of the Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District (GKMD), the wisdom of this proposal was questioned by several councillors.

Responding to the concerns of Councillor Craig Doyle, district engineer Joanne Kehoe said she had received a number of submissions from the public regarding the plans and said she would take “them on board and assess them”.

After Cllr Darragh McDonald revealed that he had received nothing but negative feedback from members of the public regarding the proposal, Cllr Joe Sullivan produced the results of an unofficial survey he had conducted during his own time.

“I parked there for an hour and counted the cars which turned right (152) and those which turned left (53),” he said. “Then I took two separate drives from Church St to the Main Road and it took me four minutes longer when I turned left.

“Changing that junction at Church St is not going to solve the problems we have with safety in the town,” he continued. “The way to resolve this is very simple, put in a set of traffic lights the same is at The 64. That left-turn only is going to create further congestion.”

Taking the councillors’ suggestions on board, Ms Kehoe said she was willing to rethink this plan if required.

“If the consensus is that no-one’s in favour we’ll go back to the drawing board and review it again.”
