The Office of Public Works (OPW) has provided an update on the current use of the old Garda Barracks on Cross St, New Ross following a query submitted by the local council.

Last used as a garda station over 20 years ago, the building is now occupied by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). However, amid concerns it wasn’t in regular use, members of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD) requested an update from the OPW regarding the building’s future.

A response from the OPW, received on July 4, sought to address the councillors’ query.

“The Commissioners for Public Works in Ireland hold a lease for 250 years on the former Garda Barracks, Cross St, New Ross,” it read. “The DSP has an ongoing requirement for this building where its staff regularly meet with members of the public by appointment only.”
