New footpaths, cycle lanes, and lighting proposed for busy Gorey road
Wexford PeopleWith an increasing number of young people walking and cycling along its confines after dark calls have been made to install additional lighting on the Leather Factory Road in Ramstown, Gorey. Used by those accessing the gyms in the area and by young footballers travelling to and from training, the lack of lighting on the road has repeatedly been raised by Councillors Anthony Donohue and Darragh McDonald at the monthly meetings of the Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District (GKMD).
Following his latest query at their December meeting, district engineer Joanne Kehoe confirmed that Cllr Donohue’s request had been forwarded to Wexford County Council’s roads office for review.
While the lack of lighting is one problem, the uneven footpaths and poor road surface has also been cited as a concern. And rather than address each issue individually, Ms Kehoe said there may be a one-size fits all solution for the road.
“I have applied for active travel measures there (new footpaths and cycle lanes),” she said. “If there are funds available for that it will include lighting along that section of road.”
Sensing an opportunity to take a cheeky dig at his colleagues, Cllr Joe Sullivan noted that “all the young lads from Gorey Rangers are going up that way seeing as they have nowhere else to play”, referencing the recent vote which rejected a proposal to let Rangers use the pitch at the town park free of charge.
