A new space for “reflection, conversation, and quiet enjoyment” is to be created in Pearse Park offering visitors the opportunity to remember a loved one in a public space.

This memorial area will be developed by the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD) and has been made possible through funding from the outgoing cathaoirleach of the district, Councillor John Dwyer, and Niamh Bolger, Wexford County Council’s (WCC) Age Friendly Officer.

The new memorial area will feature a raised space with natural stone paving and planters designed to reflect the tranquillity of the surroundings. Two memorial benches have been installed, each featuring spaces for plaques that families can purchase to dedicate to their loved ones. A granite stone will also be placed in the area, bearing the inscription “Dodhearmadta Riamh” (Never Forgotten).

“Many locals have asked me over the years about the possibility of having a memorial bench for a loved one here in town,” said Cllr Dwyer. “I’m delighted that, through funding I have provided as cathaoirleach, and working with the district team, this new memorial area at Pearse Park is now becoming a reality. It’s a great way for those families to have a dedicated, dignified space to remember and honour the people they miss.”

Niamh Bolger, Wexford County Council Age Friendly Officer, added “The bench will serve as a lasting place of remembrance, reflection and connection, whilst highlighting the positive impact of collaboration between the New Ross Municipal District and Age Friendly Wexford in creating inclusive community spaces.”

Further details regarding the timeline for installation and information on how to apply to purchase a dedication plaque will be announced in the coming weeks by the NRMD.
