In the wake of another significant water outage in Wexford town, Mayor Vicky Barron has called on Uisce Éireann (UÉ) to provide details of its plans to upgrade the network in the area.

Speaking at the September meeting of Wexford County Council (WCC), Mayor Barron said that while news Wexford town (as well as Gorey and Enniscorthy) had been identified as a priority location for investment was welcome, further information was required.

“Can we ask UÉ for its infrastructure plans across all the districts of the county?” she asked chief executive Eddie Taaffe. “In the Borough district we had two pipes burst because of works going on in the area, if the existing pipework isn’t resilient what hope have we got?

“I’m happy UÉ has decided to target Wexford an area of investment, that’s to be welcomed, but we need to know the extent of its plans.”

In response, Mr Taaffe said the council had information on “certain parts” of the proposed upgrades and that he would contact Uisce Éireann to request additional information.

When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said “details of specific works in the different areas of Wexford will be issued as they become available over the coming months”.

“For the moment we are just announcing the 72 locations where the investment will be prioritised through the Accelerated Growth Funding,” they added.
