‘Increased illumination’ at crossings on Wexford Quay will make life safer for pedestrians and motorists alike
Wexford PeopleLighting at the three pedestrian crossings on Wexford Quay is to be significantly upgraded as the county council focuses on improving safety for pedestrians during the dark winter months. Over €60,000 is to be spent on “substantially increasing illumination” at all three crossings along the Quay resulting in higher visibility for all road users.
€50,000 will be spent on new lighting fixtures and fittings with a further €12,000 invested on bringing the traffic lights fully up to modern standards.
Welcoming the news, local councillor Robbie Staples said his constituents had repeatedly raised their concerns about the lack of lighting at the crossings and said it was a major problem during the darker evenings and high-traffic periods.
“This is a matter of public safety,” Cllr Staples said. “For months, we’ve been highlighting the dangers at these crossings. I’m pleased that the engineer’s report has now confirmed the scale of the issue and set out a clear path for upgrading the lighting. These works are essential to ensuring that pedestrians are visible and protected.”
Roads engineer Lar Lett acknowledged the concerns raised and confirmed that the upgrade works will now move forward, with the focus on improving visibility, modernising the lighting system, and enhancing overall pedestrian safety along the quay.
However, Cllr Staples emphasised the need for swift delivery of the works.
“We cannot wait for a serious accident to occur,” he said. “This investment is a vital step in making the quay safer for everyone: residents, visitors, and road users alike. I will continue to push for timely action and ensure this remains a priority until the upgrades are completed.”
