‘Immediate and sustained action’ required to make access point to Wexford’s most popular beach safe
Wexford PeopleAn access point to Co Wexford’s most popular beach has been made inaccessible by repeated storms and heavy rain during the winter months. Culleton’s Gap, which is located at The Raven and leads onto Curracloe Beach, has been reduced to mud and water with the boardwalk onto the beach completely submerged.
Recognising the issues faced by families using this access point to the beach, local councillor Robbie Staples has called for “immediate and sustained action” to address the ongoing flooding and accessibility issues.
After receiving a detailed update from Wexford County Council officials, Cllr Staples welcomed the confirmation that a permanent solution is now being advanced — but stressed the need for urgency given the prolonged disruption at one of the county’s most popular coastal amenities.
Council engineers have confirmed that a permanent extension and raising of the existing boardwalk has now been identified as the appropriate solution, with a gentle chamfer on both sides to ensure safe public access. It is expected that works will commence when the weather improves.
“This entrance is a vital access point for families, walkers, and nature lovers,” said Cllr Staples. “The current conditions are unacceptable, and I am pushing to ensure a solution in put in place and delivered as soon as weather conditions allow. The community deserves a safe, reliable, entrance to the beach.”
The Fine Gael councillor said that images taken on-site demonstrate the scale of the problem and reinforce the need for a “durable, long-term solution rather than temporary patchwork measures”.
