‘Green-eyed monsters’ from other districts ‘penalising’ community groups in Rosslare by reducing funding allocations
Wexford People"Green-eyed monsters” from other districts are actively penalising community groups in the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD) because they’re jealous of the work they do.
That’s according to Rosslare councillor Lisa McDonald who said the decision to split community funding by population rather than evenly across Co Wexford’s five districts was an example of the jealousy which pervades the rest of the county.
Speaking at the January meeting of the RMD, Cllr McDonald noted that the council’s 2025 planning report showed that one-fifth of all commenced housing builds were in Rosslare and its surrounds.
“This show we are delivering here for the people and that the RMD is a very desirable place to live,” she said. “The community groups are doing huge work here and they are part of the reason why the RMD is such a desirable place to live.”
In the wake of the Local Community Development Committee’s (LCDC) decision to allocate the RMD the least amount of funding under the Local Enhancement Programme (LEP), Cllr McDonald said this was a clear and obvious sign of the regard in which Rosslare’s community groups were held in.
"It’s unfortunate that they should be penalised unfairly, the work they are doing is causing green-eyed monsters from other districts, and it’s causing jealousy in other districts,” she said. “But these are grown-up councillors (in other districts) and they should be able to take their medicine. Maybe they need to look at the way the councillors in the RMD liaise with the groups in the district.”
