Full South East Greenway route expected to be open to the public in the summer of 2027
Wexford PeopleWhile a section of the South East Greenway has been open to the public for more than two years the entire 24km route is not expected to be fully open until the summer of 2027. Explaining the delays, Sean Meyler of Wexford County Council’s (WCC) special projects team addressed councillors at the September meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD).
“Works have been substantially completed from the Rhu Glen to Waterford for some months,” he said. “What’s holding us up is we need access to the route from the North Quays project in Waterford with an accessible ramp, that won’t be available until November.
"At Lot 4 (which goes through Mount Elliot Tunnel) the design is advancing well and the programme is to go out to tender at the end of the year with contractors on site in March or April 2026. Investigation works are continuing on the other sections with tenders expected to go out in Q1 of next year with the contractor on site by the summer. We’re still looking at completion by the summer of 2027.”
Meanwhile, an active travel scheme, which will see new footpaths and cycle lanes constructed on the outskirts of New Ross, is also due to begin construction subject to the widening of O'Hanrahan Bridge.
