The level of deterioration on one of Wexford town’s busiest roads has been described as “unacceptable” by local councillor Robbie Staples. Calling for “urgent intervention” to repair “extensive potholes, cracking, and surface failure” on the Drinagh Road, Cllr Staples said the stretch between The Faythe and the Rosslare Roundabout has worsened significantly during the winter months.

“This road is one of the main gateways into Wexford town, and it needs to be treated as such,” he said. “The level of deterioration is unacceptable, and we need both immediate repairs and a proper resurfacing strategy. Our residents and businesses deserve safe, reliable infrastructure.”

At the January and February meetings of the Wexford Borough District, Cllr Staples raised the matter directly with senior engineer Lar Lett, stressing that the current state of the road is no longer acceptable for the volume of daily traffic it carries.

"As a key artery for commuters, residents, and commercial vehicles, the Drinagh Road plays a vital role in the town’s transport network,” said Cllr Staples. “Its poor condition now poses risks to road users, damages vehicles, and undermines the overall appearance and functionality of the area.”

The Fine Gael councillor has requested immediate short‑term repairs, specifically the filling of potholes along the road and has also pressed for a long‑term resurfacing plan, noting that patchwork fixes alone will not address the underlying structural issues.

Cllr Staples said he will continue to work with council officials to ensure that both interim repairs and long‑term improvements are prioritised in upcoming works programmes.
