Dog mess outside New Ross school creating problems as lack of bins gives owners an ‘excuse’
Wexford PeopleA lack of dog fouling bins beside a New Ross secondary school is giving pet owners an “excuse” not to clean up after their dogs. Raising the issue at the September meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD) Councillor Bridín Murphy said she had received “a number of calls” about dog fouling in certain parts of town.
“Could we carry out an analysis of where dog bins in the town are located?” she asked. “There’s a significant lack of them in particular areas, one area that’s been pointed out to me is St Stephen’s cemetery by Bunscoil Rís at the petrol station, there’s been a lot of complaints about dog fouling there, and there aren’t any bins on that road.
"Can we look at this and ensure that people don't have an excuse not to pick up after their dog? I’m not condoning it in any sense but if there are bins available it removes that excuse.”
Keen to ensure his locality wasn’t missing out, Cllr Pat Barden asked that if any new bins were being assigned that some be provided for Adamstown too.
In response, environmental engineer Hugh Maguire said he would “have a look at the situation and prioritise areas where there aren’t any bins”.
“It’s worth noting that any bin can be used to deposit waste, it doesn’t specifically have to be a dog bin,” he added.
