A derelict site on New Ross’s Mary Street is not only becoming an “eyesore” in the centre of town, but it is also now a meeting place for the area’s stray cats. Raising the issue at the September meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD) Councillor John Dwyer said the site, formerly owned by the Augustinians, has huge potential.

“When are we going to deal with that?” he asked. “It’s disgraceful looking, and the area has such potential, we have steps going up there and it could be a beautiful part of our town.”

“It’s an eyesore,” agreed district manager Alan Fitzhenry, “and it needs dealing with. Negotiations are ongoing and there’s a legal discussion with regards to the sale.”

Director of services Eamonn Hore confirmed that the sale of the site was close to completion before Cllr John Fleming took a moment of reflection.

“It brings back memories of running down those steps after school, running for freedom,” he reminisced.

“When you were in short pants and had no shoes,” said Cllr Marty Murphy.

Returning to the present day, Cllr Michael Sheehan said those currently using the steps had to be removed.

“If we could put a sign up asking whoever’s feeding the cats to stop doing so, I’m sure they’re doing it with good intentions but it’s attracting lots of cats to the area.”
