Decade-long wait for new coastguard station in Wexford continues despite claims a site was previously identified
Wexford PeopleThe decade-long wait for a new coastguard station in a seaside Wexford village will continue for at least another two months after a councillor’s query for information went ignored.
At the June meeting of the Rosslare Municipal District (RMD) Councillor Ger Carthy had requested that correspondence be sent to the Office of Public Works (OPW) regarding the status of the new station at Kilmore Quay. However, at the July meeting he was dismayed to learn his request had not been fulfilled.
“I presume there’s been correspondence sent to the OPW on this,” he said. “I’ve had the Minister for the OPW (Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran) asking me about this.”
“We have no update but we’ll follow it up,” said acting district manager Edwina Colfer who admitted that the RMD had yet to contact the OPW.”
Meanwhile, Cllr Jim Codd had been in touch with those in Kilmore Quay and returned with an unofficial update on the status of the coastguard station.
“A site in the ownership of WCC was identified and was considered suitable for the new station,” he said. “I understand we’re back to square one and are looking for a site again, but one has already been identified. We should move with that site rather than start over.”
