Council has no plans to dredge Wexford’s Crescent Quay – ‘I’m not convinced we won’t just end up back at square one’

Wexford County Council (WCC) has no immediate plans to dredge the Crescent Quay due to fears that it will end up right back where it started. At the July meeting of WCC, Councillor Tom Forde asked for assurances that plans to dredge the Quay hadn’t “fallen off the radar”.

“It’s badly needed,” he said, “it’s an eyesore at the moment, can we see some progression on that?”

However, chief executive Eddie Taaffe said the council was unwilling to carry out any works until a long-term sustainable solution had been found.

“Dredging the Crescent Quay would be a very significant piece of work,” he said. “It would cost a five-figure sum to do it and it would be very intrusive work in terms of excavating the town centre. The reason we haven’t dredged it yet is because I’m not convinced we won’t just end up back at square one.

"We want a permanent solution to the problem there and any resolutions we’ve looked at so far don’t guarantee the silt won’t come back. I’d rather we’d come up with a permanent solution, have that in place, and then dredge it. Otherwise it will just be a waste of money. We do have consultants looking at it trying to figure out what the best solutions are.”
