Motorists in the Co Wexford village of Clonroche are continuing to park on the footpath outside the local shop despite being issued fines by gardaí for doing so. According to Councllor Bridín Murphy, there is “a certain cohort who won’t park anywhere except the front of the shop” and will “park on the footpath do that”.

Not even the installation of double yellow lines has deterred this cohort from parking wherever they wish and, at the February meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD), Cllr Murphy and Cllr John Fleming proposed ways to eradicate the problems outside Hammel’s Centra permanently.

“I stood outside the shop for an hour with the owner trying to see what the solution to the problem is there,” saud Cllr Fleming. “For me the only solution is to put steel bollards outside the shop, about ten bollards could solve the issue. It would stop cars parking right outside the shop and jeeps driving up on to the pavement.”

“Double yellow lines were put in but no one is respecting them,” added Cllr Murphy. “The guards are issuing fines but there is a certain cohort who won’t park anywhere except the front of the shop, and they’ll park on the footpath to do that. A review of the whole village is required.”

Senior engineer David Murphy has already discussed the issue with local gardaí and said they are doing their best to enforce parking restrictions as best they can.

“I will be meeting the road safety officer shortly and will discuss putting bollards outside the shop with him,” he added.
