Coastal protection works at north Wexford beach can’t come soon enough, says councillor – ‘if the sea breaks there it will make an island out of it’
Wexford PeopleWorks to protect the coastline in Cahore, Co Wexford are expected to commence next summer after the local council confirmed it has received €500,000 to install rock armour there. Confirming that the works are now at the design stage, environmental engineer Enda Brennan provided an update at the November meeting of the Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District (GKMD).
“We have funding of €500,000 from the Office of Public Works (OPW) for rock armour at the north beach,” said Mr Brennan. “We will be putting in a concrete access ramp there also and will meet with residents to notify them of what the works entail. Our intention is to submit a planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanala (ACP) by the end of this year or the start of next and we would expect to begin construction after Easter 2026.”
Noting that the works would see approximately 200 metres of coastline protected, Councillor Pip Breen said there were miles of Wexford coast in a similarly vulnerable state.
“We have soft coastline from The Raven all the way to Castletown, but Cahore is definitely need of protection, if the sea breaks there it will make an island out of it,” he said.
A public information evening will take place on Monday, December 15 from 5-7 p.m. at Ballygarrett GAA Club
