Calls for safety audit on Wexford’s deadliest stretch of road following 20th fatality in last 40 years

Following the passing of Nataliia Voskanova in late August calls have been made to carry out a safety audit on the stretch of road which claimed her life. Ms Voskanova was knocked down on Gorey’s Main Street in June of this year and subsequently moved to hospital where, following a two-month long battle, she succumbed to her injuries on August 28.

And, having attended the Ukrainian woman’s funeral, Councillor Joe Sullivan said it was incumbent on the county council to ensure this was the last fatality to occur in the centre of Gorey.

“The figures are stark,” he said at the September meeting of the Gorey KIlmuckridge Municipal District (GKMD). “In the area from the hospital in Gorey to the railway bridge eight people have been killed in the last 40 years. And from Marlfield House to the turn for the Red Row, 12 people have been killed.

"That’s 20 people killed in 4km of roads in the last 40 years. That’s one person killed every two years. That’s carnage.”

Questioning whether any roads in the county had such a high rate of fatal accidents, Cllr Sullivan asked that the council’s road safety team examine the areas in question and look at ways to improve safety there.

He also requested that another part of the district, one which has become particularly dangerous for cyclists, receive similar treatment.

“On the Courtown Road there has been two cyclists knocked down in the last 18 months, I know the inclusion of the footpath has narrowed the road and reduced the speed there, but a safety audit is required there too.”
